11th in the UK for English

(QS World rankings by Subject 2020)

Grounded in London’s East End, our research and teaching emphasises global perspectives and the relationship between literature and the wider world. We are a highly critically- engaged English department – like the students we teach – and our areas of specialism include postcolonial and world literature, gender studies, queer theory and new media, ranging across platforms from the manuscript to the book, and from the stage to the digital.
